If it's a pocket piece, I would use a 1976-S uncirculated Ike 40% silver dollar. They are cheap and plentiful.

Well now that you have established that a half dollar will work and it needs to be under $100 you have opened up a whole new world. Look on e-bay and you may be surprised to learn for that money you can get a bust half. The specific example pictured above by wheatchaser140 (date, mint mark, grade) can be had for less than $100, as can a large percentage of Barber halves in similar condition. |

And if you're not happy with the Barber half dollar, may I suggest the Seated Liberty half dollar (1839-1891). There were many common years/mint marks where millions of the coin type were minted, thus mostly inexpensive. This 1878 was $52:   Does it have "character"? I vote: YES!  |

An 1861-O Confederate struck Half would be a much more interesting pocket piece.
I paid $60 for mine.

There is a half dollar that may fit into your writing and quite honestly add an extra layer for your book in many ways. A worn bust half dollar could also work in a story of a modern metro area for a character who has a family hand be down coin. Besides a hand me down piece a writer could think up a rather juicy side story that might fit with the characters character. Plus this is a very old coin examples for less that $100 in rough condition date back over 180 years to the pre-civil war era.
