There appears to be some wear in the hair over the ear. It's tough for me to call based on what I see in the photo.

Every little mark or scratch will stand out on MS gold. The surface on this coin looks like it would go MS64. I don't know what to think of the wear or lack of. The photo lacks contrast.

It has a lot of luster in the fields, but with the nicks and dings it has plus what appears to be wear or a week strike, I would put it at around AU58.

Looks like a rub on the high spots from here, which would make it AU, hard to tell..
That's why you don't want mess with these unless they are graded by a TPG.

It would have to be a crazy good deal for me to gamble on a raw coin of that value.

One look at the stars proves the first coin has circulated. I wouldn't go over AU55 for it. I've a little more confidence in the 1896, but if you get a good deal at a Proxibid auction it'll be the first I've heard of.

I'd be at AU-58 on this one. Not sure why it would not already be slabbed if it were a $5k coin as seller suggests by the price on the 2x2.
