Hi,

I'm in the process of reorganizing & re-grading my coins. I'm fairly new to grading so I would appreciate some help. I have two that I disagree with the original dealers assessment as to the grade. I know it's hard to grade with a photo but any help is appreciated. They were both graded XF but are obviously not the same grade. I think one is VF-20 or possibly even F-12 and the other looks like it could be an AU-50, though it may still be an EF-40.

Thanks.

Hi Brian, Welcome to Coin community Forums!!
Your first coin the 1926S looks like it could be EF-40
The 1922D looks VF-25, nice semi-key date..

Enjoy your stay with us.

Thanks for the feedback. BadThad, why do you say cleaned? I don't see any abrasions so was wondering if it's something to do with the toning.

26-S: AU Details, cleaned
22-D: VF

You can tell the 26-S was cleaned because of that 'slick' look. Natural color won't have an iridescent look to it, as this one appears to have.

Thanks. That's something that I'll look for while shopping in the future. I'm looking to buy a few to finish my collection. I've Googled about how to tell if coins are cleaned and a lot of the articles just say it's experience. I read post on this site about cleaning some non-collectible cents with different methods to see what they look like. I may try that.

The 1926-S looks AU details, and the 1922-D looks VF-20 or 25. Could be a weak strike though. Is that a die crack or a scratch on the 22-D reverse?

That's a scratch on the back of the 22d.

I take that back. It looks like it is a die issue. It's up instead of down like a scratch would be. What does that mean?

Here's another. The marks are exactly the same. I didn't notice the smaller mark until after looking at this.

After a little more research, this means it's die variety 1. I don't think it's anything special unless someone is specifically looking for it.

It's a very old cleaning, comes down to the overall look of the coin. The fields are flat and the area around LIBERTY looks different probably because that area wasn't cleaned as well. I've seen a lot of Lincolns that have this look over the years and it's not natural.
