I am contemplating purchasing one from the US Mint but was wondering if the mint is still taking orders. The program was originally limited to 40,000 coins and started back around 8/1.

Did the mint extend either the quantity or the ordering period?

I just checked their website and as I write this, you can shop online and add it to your cart.......suggesting that you can still place an order.

It was never limited, they merely minted 40K initially. The program is mint-to-order, so as long as orders are coming in, they'll be minting coins.

As Bstrauss said they made up 40,000 to have on hand on the first day of sales, but there is no maximum mintage limited. They will make as many as they can sell (but they can;t STRIKE anymore after Dec 31st)

They are minted to demand so you should still be able to order one.

With the current state of the gold market what do you think the possibility is of even a lower price before the end of the year.

Further, I just saw that there is a mint imposed moratorium on new purchases and fulfillment until after 10/1 due to the upgrade of the mint's current web site. They're not be even taking phone orders and the web site will be unavailable for a short while.

Yes, I would wait. There is a strong possibility you'll be able to pick one this fall at the under $1200 gold spot price which is $1,165 and a good possibility at catching the sub-$1150 gold price of $1127.50.

Don't wait until December to order though because the mint sometimes cuts off sales prior to the end of the calendar year. I would order no later than Thanksgiving. Good Luck!

BH I think that that is good advice. However, I think that I should also see how many coins are being ordered also. If this number really starts to fall I'll have to move quicker than anticipated. But at least I should have the funds available to make the purchase then.

As with most people I don't like to see the price of gold to fall but then I don't want to turn this into a thread about the price of gold either. In any event I'll wait.
