Hi all , here a few new ones on the last two outings I'm really happy with the Nero as I've never had a SPQR on a coin before .

The Nero looks to be quite nice. A bit of careful conservation might yield a VF+ ! Left facing ? I have not seen this type on an As before. It may be a 'rare' type ! Very nice

Thanks for that FVRIVS , could you suggest a conservation method ? I tend to pop them in a display case and leave well alone !

I think Ben's favorite distilled water method is the best way to start. Occasional buff with a tooth brush and frequent water changes should get some of the 'stuff' off. After that you can make a decision whether to proceed further. Caution is best when dealing with characters like Nero !

Really nice looking Nero along with some interesting artifacts. Would love to see what the Eagle looks like once it's cleaned a bit.

Very nice finds! Lovely green patinas on them.
Once again this American metal detectorist is jealous! My last outing yielded eleven coins, none of them older than 1970.

What culture do you suppose that eagle-shaped fragment is from? I'm guessing Saxon, maybe?

I'm thinking the eagle is Roman based on the rest of the finds , to covered in a thick black hard substance not iron though , not really sure how to remove it ? I still see you American pulling up some really nice finds though Pail .

If you think that the eagle might be bronze, I would have a go at giving that a prolonged soak in DW. As for toothbrushes, I went to Asda and got a pack of their basic brushes. Cut the bristles down to half length, they will last you for ages. As soon as the water becomes cloudy, change it. What does the other side of the eagle look like?

There are some really good hunting grounds in the Dorset area. I visit a place near Dawlish a few times a year and the finds are always good. The Nero is a beauty, very rare I pull anything like that out, the smaller ones seem to be common finds but are still always very exciting, especially when Carausius pops his head up. Nice group of finds MB.
You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

Dawlish is a very beautiful part of the country MetDet I've been a few times, and we are lucky in dorset for finds , if you look at hod hill you can clearly see the Roman camp and 30 minutes up the road is maiden castle and 20 minutes the other way is a celtic mint hengistbury head .
