RARE CANADIANA IN TORONTO AUCTION - PRESS RELEASE - Sept 25, 2014
Geoffrey Bell Auctions will be featuring two rare and early pieces of Canadian history in its next auction at the Toronto Coin Expo October 2 and 3. The auction is to be held at the Toronto Reference Library.
The first early historical group is of great importance particularly to the Canadian geology and mining sector. The lot originated from the fonds of Sir William Logan who founded the Geological Survey of Canada in 1842. Logan was born in Montreal, Quebec but educated in Scotland. He began his work in Wales researching coal seams. After the presentation of a paper in London, England, the Canadian government took notice and asked him to establish and head up the Geological Survey of Canada. Over his career, he was awarded 27 medals for his accomplishments. He was Canada's commissioner at the Crystal Palace Exhibition 1851 and a set of medals presented to him reside in the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. These items probably date from the inauguration of the Department of Mines in 1907, and were placed in the Logan fonds at that time, as they relate to the Geological Survey of Canada. A once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a piece of Canadian history of supreme importance. The lot consists of 3 buttons, a hat badge and a belt buckle.

The second item is a superb cane presented to E.B. Eddy of Hull, Quebec. Born in the United States, Eddy immigrated to Quebec in 1854 where he manufactured wooden matches and by 1856, he added wooden pails, tubs, clothes pins, washboards, etc. to his company's products. He rebuilt his premises after 2 disastrous fires in 1882 and 1900. He became Mayor of Hull at different times and represented Ottawa legislative district in the Quebec Legislative Assembly from 1871 to 1875. It was in 1871 that his employees presented Eddy this cane. It is wooden with an engraved ivory dog at the top. A brass plate adorns the cane stating "To E.B. Eddy from His Employees 1st Jan., 1871".

These rare item and many others rare coins, tokens and banknotes will be available for viewing at the Toronto Coin Expo prior to the Geoffrey Bell Auction on Oct 2-3, 2014 at the Toronto Reference Library, located at 789 Yonge Street. The Toronto Coin Expo is Canada's premier coin and banknote show and auction, hosting world renowned coin dealers. The public is invited to the bourse floor where 35 dealers will be offering coins, medals, tokens and banknotes from Canada and the world. Bit of an 'oops' on that historical artifact...
I can pretty much guarantee that those are not Sir William Logan's items. The Department of Mines did not exist until well after his death. He worked for the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), which was its own entity. The Department of Mines was set up in 1907, and I believe these buttons and belt buckles date to the 1910s (or possibly the 1920s) when there was a field uniform and flag used by GSC personnel. Zaslow talks about this in his publication, "Reading the Rocks", if you want to follow up and get the correct dates. They are really neat, though.
Also, don't know what the William Logan Fonds are. I thought they referred to his collection of rare books held in the GSC Library, I'll ask our librarian (since I work at the GSC).

I've never been to a live auction before. Is it like the movies?
You sign up, sit down, they give you a paddle and you just raise it to bid on an item?
Total noob question sorry :( How does it really work?

Hi all,
I am going to the show (have only been to one other coin show in my life!) and had a quick question. Do the dealers do trades? Essentially I have quite a stack of f or lower silver dimes and quarters that I would like to use towards some gaps in my type set collection. Is it worth bringing them?
Thanks in advance!

wilson: it's exactly like that... first auction I was ever at I was afraid to scratch my nose.. after a few you're pretty comfortable and know the process.. the right auctioneer can totally make or break an auction.
Wild: I would if I was you... I mean it would probably depend on the dealer.. they would probably see an advantage of selling some stock for something in silver value..

Dealers will do trades, myself included, but bear in mind that dealers need to make money with bullion (essentially, Seigniorage). If you want my advice, shop around and see who will give the best price for silver, sell it, and then use the cash to buy the coins missing in your collection. Cash is king, and dealers always will move better on their selling prices with cash sales (75 to 80% of the listed price)...
Do pop by my table to say hello... ask for SPP-Ottawa.... (the sign at my table is the same as my avatar).

perhaps we should initiate interest in a WESTERN coin expo in either Vancouver, or more reasonable, in Victoria?
