I'm new to this forum, have been collecting coins but not seriously before. But now I would like to do it seriously. How do you figure out what the best buys are? Do you go by the mint? Any tips would be appreciated.
Thank You.

Welcome
The question you ask is like asking what is the purpose of life.

First What kind of coins do you want to collect.
Domestic or foreign?

Is there a special coin you like pennys, quarters, dracma ?

What quality of coin do you want ot collect circulated, proofs?
How much money are you interested in investing? Is this daily weekly monthly yearly.

Answer a few of these and then we can give you a bit more guidance

Welcome shatsi! Before going off on any coin buying trips I reccomend doing some reading first. A good and inexpensive starting out book is The Offical Red Book , A guide book of United States coins. This is published by Whitman Coins and is readily available for around $15.00 There are many others as well, but this is a good start if you choose to collect American coins and interesting to read through even if you dont.

Next, are you looking to collect as a hobby, or as an investment? Try to locate a Dealer near your home and work on developing a realationship with him/her.

You need some experience before jumping into the internet fray, unless you do all your homework up front. I've been at this off and on for 35 years and learn something new several times a day!

If you let the forum know about where you live you may get some recomendations for dealers. A great rule of thumb is "buy the book before the coin" We look forward to your questions and input. Thanks, Mike

I am also brand new to this forum, but not to coin forums in general.

This one impresses me, and also has many of my old, knowledgable friends from other forums. I'm sure you will learn a lot.

Welcome.

Thank you every one. I have the Red Book and have been reading through. I started collecting coins as a hobby when I was small, so I didn't have any knowledge about it. Recently I received a set of MS69 Silver Dollers and that's what really got me interested in it as an investment. I like to start off collecting domestic coins. Dollers, circulated. I've been looking at morgan dollers but not very knowledgable on it. I'm in Queens County, NY. If there's any dealers around here, please let me know.
