Hello. I have just acquired this token. I am unsure of the variety of this coin. This coin is 26mm in diameter, and weighs 3.3 grams. It has a coinage die axis. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello. How can you tell the difference between the 2 varieties?

OK I blew the pic up quite a bit and it looks to me like you got yourself a BL 24 B ..The first S in ships is above the first O in Colonies and off to the right...Are you a token collector ?

Thank you for the info. I was hoping for good news like this. I am a coin collector and have had many tokens pass through my hands.

We were thinking of getting this token graded and putting it in an auction. Will ICCS know to look for this variety or will we have to make a note of it?

ICCS will know it for sure.. But for the little extra I would send it to CCCS in Quebec and have it put in a Hard slab then if you want have ICCS cross grade it

Question, they classify this as a blacksmith,it shows a lot of detail in design. Do you think they could be just poor dies used to strike ?

From the photos provided, I suspect this to be a BL 24B provided there is no beading on the reverse.
Blacksmith tokens come in varying degrees of manufacture. Most are crude while others are much better designed. Today one can not inquire of the designer as to his intent.

I will be writing about Blacksmith Tokens in my new book coming in 2016 titled: Forgotten Coins of the American Colonies - Revisited.
If you have questions, interesting rare pieces I will place them in the book if noteworthy.
Drooping Sail Variety - seems familiar? <VVBG>.
