Went to usmint.gov and apparently it's closed between 9/27 and 10/1.They actually shut down the site in preparation for the new site. Seems like an odd thing to do. Isn't there going to be a gap in their order queue? However, it may also be a way for them to catch up on backorders.
Just speculation, but I'd bet it won't be smooth sailing when the new site is launched.

well, you do need some time to really screw things up so they do not wish to be disturbed.

Tryna as you say it takes time to flub things up and heaven knows that the government has the means and personnel to do the job proud. Just take a look at their track record.

Well I work for a county government And have been dealing with the right hand not talking to the left hand for the last few days so I was most likely a bit harsh. I am sure the mint is doing a bang up job of scre.. I mean setting up the new website.

For the bazillionth time, the mint is not the government. They are their own entity. Besides, do you really think you could install an entirely new system on this scale while running the old one at the same time and do smoothly?

Yes, that's how most switch overs happen.

It is not uncommon to take several days to convert data between an old and new system and run through the backlog of data accumulated during said outage. We took seven days in March.

The U.S. Mint has given ample advance notice of this ordering freeze; several months, I believe. They may lose a few sales due to the moratorium but hopefully in the long run it makes for a better shopping experience. It's a cost of doing business.

my few bookmarks still work and all I can see is the lesser amount of graphics and background clutter.

Looks ok to me. Proof will be when the Kennedy sets go on sale and we see how it performs under stress.

I was able to get in. It forced me to reset my password by e-mail confirmation. Other than that, no problems.
