After dragging my friend to several coin shops over the summer, he has decided that he likes coins himself and really likes IHC after finding one in his change. He also seen me collecting in albums by date and mint mark and thinks it's really cool and would like to do the same with IHC.

I don't collect the series myself since I was a small boy. I was wondering if you guys had any tips I should pass on to him.

He will try grabbing the majority of latter dates from junk boxes in good to fine condition in junk boxes. I already told him the keys are 1877 and the 1909 s. I also warned him how they will increase significantly in cost in low grades as the dates go futher back. He's like 20 and works so he isn't exactly a kid collector working off of allowance money, but he's also definitely won't be collecting stabbed coins any time soon.

Get the Whitman book "A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian cents" by Rick Snow, then potentially as he progresses into his collecting, join the Fly-In Club, also he must visit Rick Snow's website, which was just redesigned last month. Rick is the foremost expert on the series http://www.indiancent.com and has authored many books on IHC coins and varieties. He also has a set of free youtube videos on how to grade them posted there.

Charmy Harker also has a nice website featuring primarily Indian cents. http://www.thepennylady.com

It is a nice set to put together. As far as mint marks ... there are only two
the 1909 S and 1908 S. Both of those are more expensive than common coins.

If possible, do not buy problem coins. Hold out for better coins .. even if you have
to save up for them. Decide what grade you would like for each coin and what you be
good prices for that grade. When you find that coin .. at the right price .. buy it then .. or it might slip away from it.
