This is the 2nd coin I've found like this. I tossed the other, but now that I've got a second I wonder if others have seen them. What is it?

To me it looks like PMD. If the die was chipping in that area it wouldn't be recessed like this is, there would be raised die chips instead.

If it were a planchet flaw, the damage wouldn't be on the devices as it is, as the flaw would have been there well before it ever got to the dies.

That's what I thought ...but this is the second I've come across that's from my recollection identical. Couldn't be a strike through?

Are you thinking struck through something Coop? Something partially occluding the MM and sticking to the face of the hammer die?

Wild guessing here. I would have passed on these as PMD.

I wonder if the die was starting to rust in that area? Or something like sand sticking on the die?
