I found this Wheat penny with a metal square in the middle of the head. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you

I can't tell from the pics whether it is a genuine error or PMD.

If pressed into the coin (incuse) then it is damage to the coin. It looks like it was altered with a straight pin or small nail. PSD

Just below the cheek bone? I am not sure what that is.

Lamination errors are formed by the same process that forms a "woody". An improperly alloyed planchent separates under the right conditions. Sometimes before being struck, sometimes during striking; or after striking.

At times the affected section is separated from the coin/planchet. Other times it is retained.

What you have is a classic retained lamination error. Trust me on this. I examine hundreds of thousands of LWC's a year. I sell a couple of hundred lamination and struck through errors a year.

Your's is a cool coin, but it's market value is minimal. 41 is a common year for a woody, and the lamination is not large enough to attract much attention.

I'd stick it in a 2x2 as a nice woody!

It would be nice to see the reverse on this one to see if it is bulged out in the center? If so it may be damaged. A closer shot of that area would be helpful to see for sure what is going on. But if it were a lamination, then it would be minor.

Hello everyone,
Thank you all for your valuable information.
Yes I'm talking about the square right below the cheek bone. Also the edges look incoplete like if there was not enough material to complete it.
