Not my forte...However, to the CCF!

Those in the know, will likely ask for full obverse and reverse pics. But what do I know?

Perhaps one of the Mods could move this to the VAM section?

Near as I can tell, this one shows no pickups which are visible in images of the size presented. In-hand, then, you're going to need magnification to nail down this attribution. Concentrate first on determining any doubling in the date, and check the eye carefully for "odd" features.

I have it as a Normal Date, so you can stick to those listed on the page:

http://www.vamworld.com/1885-P+Obverses

At least it eliminates 23 possibilities (although it leaves 42 open).
Rest in Peace

These are a couple of possibilities http://www.vamworld.com/1885-P+VAM-1G http://www.vamworld.com/1885-P+VAM-24A based on the date location and the clash orientation.

Concur with the 1G possibility, but doubt the 24A. It lacks the additional obverse clashing of the 24A. Another possibility is the 25A (formerly 1G) with a doubled ear.

Check these out and let us know the verdict.

I looked at 1G yesterday before my post, and am worried about the rather extensive cracking it shows, while this coin appears to have none, aside the mark through the date which greatly interests me. Of course, the lack of cracking is no proof of attribution either way, but it seems to me that with a letter transfer - which tends to wear away rather quickly if faint - the die cracks had to be at least started before the clash happened. I could be wrong.

So, two questions: Is there a letter transfer on the obverse, and what's that scratch-looking line through the date?

Carlanga, you'll see the "n" letter transfer, if it's there, at the neck underneath the straight clash line.
