OK, so the reason I had asked about the other one is I was surfing ebay for one. I admit, I was spurred on by the 1882 S club thread in that after reading and chuckling, I realized I did not have one! LOL So I found this girl, and I saw the pup in the date. Doubling, die chip in the second 8, chip (?) in the 2 etc. But I will be darned if I can even come close on this one. I have gone through the pics several times and just not seeing a match. Please be so kind as to edumicate me some mores. NOTE: The green PVC gunklettes are gone now. Some qucik acetone q-tip work took care of that. They were clear in sellers pic so I knew they were there. And I can not pick up the subtle toning mixed with the nice circ tarnish. She is a lovely lady IMO.

1882-S is a scream. Virtually all of them have doubled dates, and pretty much nothing else. Yours is doubled in odd locations for the issue. See the date "bleeding" towards the rim at the 1 and 2? Sign of a very old die, the point being that pretty much all features of a given VAM (chips in the 8's, etc.) should be present on your coin. 21 or 26 are the only two that seem remotely close to me. If you forced me to decide, I'd call it 26 based on the mint mark. I got nothing for the die chip. It may be an unknown LDS feature of a known VAM.

The bleeding down is one of the things that keeps me from liking anything I saw. Perhaps a new one?

Nah, that's just an extreme LDS of the die. The relevant VAM was probably designated from an earlier strike, and that detail isn't yet recorded for it. It's important for everyone reading to realize just_how_much work is left in VAMming. It's too early in the process to even estimate how much work is left.

Im with dave on this one. But it sucks because there isn't a whole lot of people doing the work to help with the vams.
Its going to take a long time unless it gets popular and people start helping.

There's not much love for 82-S as far as VAMs. I have yet to identify any that I own. (not from lack of trying)

Oh, that was just me joking. I kind of figured it was LDS. I will just make the note of VAM? on my list. If I knew enough, I would put what time I could into helping.

Could someone tell me what a VAM is. Sorry for the ignorance.

"Extensive research on the variations in the dies used to strike silver dollars was published 44 years ago by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis. Their work centers on Morgan dollars that were minted by the United States Mint from 1878 through 1904 and the resumed again in 1921 and Peace dollars issued from 1921 through 1935. The term VAM is an acronym for "Van Allen - Mallis."" http://www.vamworld.com/ VAM
