Hey, I was just thinking about yard sales and how, as an electrical engineering student, I constantly am in the need of cheap solder wire and that I buy them less than a dollar a spool from some garage sales in addition to looking for silver coins.

There just so happens that some solder actually contains a HUGE amount of silver (56% silver!! http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/...Silv-56.aspx ) and also it is sold in industrial amounts, such as 15.55 KILOGRAMS.

So next time you see some solder lying around at a garage sale, look at it and see its silver content. Maybe you can even buy the silver under spot!

Would all the other metals make it impractical to melt? I know most people really dislike the War Nickels since the silver is not all that much and separating the metals is costly.

I don't see so. For one, you can use nitric acid to refine.

Some 'hard' solder can have silver in it as your link shows, but most common solder does not. Most solder is just tin and lead.

I consider Garbage pick-up day as free yard sale day. When I find and old standing fan or computer tower my heart skips a beat.

I'd hate to think how much you can get out of all that at one's health expense of dealing with nasty acids. Besides, what is one supposed to do with the unwanted residue? Would have been a different story if silver is at 50 USD / oz instead of the current 20 USD / oz.

I lose money after I buy silver (yes I lose money without even selling).

I MAKE money when I sell the scrapped copper and aluminum that I accumulate for free.

As far as I'm concerend, copper and aluminum are my PM's!

Lets keep this train of thought going, does anyone else have ideas for cheap metals?

Standing fans you get curb side, lots of copper in the electric motor and wiring.

Old souvenir spoons, similar to municipal trade tokens in that it shows the local colour of the place it is from and also can be bought, collected and hung quite easily AND cheaply.

I save all the green board ma'jiggers out of electronics. I know a man who chemicals them down, I sell them to him by the boat load.

Any one else?

I'd have to agree with fistfulladirt. I've made more money with aluminum (and glass) during my lifetime than with silver.

Best way to "stack" silver is coin roll hunting, IMHO.

Nitric acid is gross and dirty. Never use it if you don't know what you're doing. That said, don't melt metals (alloys) if you don't know what you're doing.

Also, don't melt silver solder. Sell it to someone that has a use for it. Melting is backwards; people took the time to make it, so why would you unmake it simply for the silver content $?; sell it as is.

I was out of work for four years and much of that time I was a 'Scrapper', There is not a metal out there has no value as scrap. I worked my tail off but help keep us afloat from what others threw away. I did not get rich but it sure helpped pay the bills.
