On the motto that is machine damage or Die Deterioration. Seen a lot on the 80's Zincolns. On the date it looks like coin contact flattened the tops of the 88. Spendable

I have seen more then a few of these and wondered what it is also. It looks like the letters and date have a high ridge on the outside and inside with a sunkened area between,I hope I explained that right .

@john: you are right,,,,maybe a characteristic of the alloy (zinc)? Almost like it "falls in the center" like baked goods after you take it out of the oven....(just s description of the appearance not implying in any way that's what happens).

Zinc is soft. The devices are tapered at the top. When contact happens, it flattens slightly and looks like the above example on the 88.
