Somewhere around five to eight years ago a lot of chinese fakes, of varieous dates, from this reverse die hit the market. They were often sold at a high premium to the unknowledgeable because of the "major mint error".
If you look carefully at UNITED you will see that it is SEVERELY doubled. In a better picture it almost looks like UUNNIITTEEDD with about a 3/4 letters width separation between the letters. (The right side of the first you is overlapped by the left side of the second, and the right side of that you overlapes the left side of the first N and so on.)
No genuine US coin used that revere, but it appeared on EVERY year on the Chinese fakes (including some years they didn't make
Seated dollars.) You see that doubled UNITED, you know you are looking at a Chinese fake.
I think they mush have had a hub with that doubling because I believe it also was seen with different mintmarks as well. These "
DDR"
Seated dollars were all over for a bout a year or so and then as the counterfeiters improved their product the discarded that hub and they gradually disappeared from the market. Eveny now and then one will appear as one of the victims tries to sell off their "investment".
They also had an obvious undated obv hub that they used to make all different dates of
Seated dollars. It was instantly identifiable by a heavy, slightly curved, horizontal gash through the top right of the shield. That gash had been on the coin they used to create their hub from. After it became well known they went back and tried to retool the damaged area on the hub, ut the repair work was clumsy and obvious. Fakes from that hub were also around for a year or two. Every now and then you would see a fake that combined dies from both of those hubs. Gashed shield with a doubled UNITED.
