I've been doing high resolution 2D and 3D Imaging of Top 100 and lesser Lincoln Wheat cent RPMs and have completed a nice group for folks to view. Here is the link to the folder on photobucket:

The 3-D images helps us to see that a RPM or doubled die is more than an altered die from die wear. You can see how the punch/hub created the variety as different from a normal die/mint mark. A lot of supposed RPMs that new collectors may find are just an altered die. A die that was normal, then polished and removed some devices. Other times it altered the edges of devices because of this over polishing. So having images in 3-D helps us to determine whether they are an altered device, or a die variety that started striking coins from the first coin. Thus the missing initials, talon head coins, three legged buffalo, missing "D" on the 1922 so called plain cents, speared bison, spitting horse and on and on with the cutesie names are just over polished dies, altered dies from over polishing. I would rather have a true variety that started out from coin number one, than to grab an altered die. People do collect these, but not me. The 3-D images show us what is really going on with a variety.
