I'm not a roll hunter or roll buyer, but I saw this roll of 1939-S Lincolns (seller claims it is an original bank roll) and was wondering if people who might buy this would leave the roll intact or open it up? 361086168958Paul Bulgerin

It's a crap shoot, but it is possible it is OBW. You would expect the end coins to be toned that way but what the other 48 look like? Who knows.
39-S roll bids only about 170$ so it is over priced to begin with. Not worth the risk/reward in my opinion.

I'd buy it if the price was $0.50 but would have to include postage.

Went for $270. PT Barnum was right. But to answer the op's question. Yes I would and only to find out how much I really paid for just how much I paid for used 1993 Lincolns.

I collect OBW Lincoln Cent rolls and I open everyone of them, examine every cent and put them in tubes. I don't keep any of my coins in paper rolls. Usually there is no extra value in the paper and it may be harmful to the condition of the coins. 99.5% of the OBW rolls I've purchased have contained the correct coins (meaning 50 - 19__ Lincoln cents). The few times that the listing was inaccurate, I was able to return them for a full refund. It cost me a few dollar in shipping charges, but it won't stop me from trying.

It's a crap-shoot. There might be 48 gem quality 1939S cents or 48 duds. The roll in the OP link does look very old and is likely to be at least 50 years old. Who knows what's in there. Maybe some IHC's or a 1909 VDB. At least we know it has a 1939S cent, which the 2014 Red Book price range is $0.15 to $6.00 for a MS63. I do not have a problem opening OBW rolls. However, I do leave Mint rolls and Federal Reserve Bank rolls intact.

The toning on those end coins looks unnatural and almost seems indicative of cleaning. No thanks!

I don't see any additional value for coins in paper rolls. Hence, I would actually pay less for coins in unopened paper rolls since I don't know what is inside.

IMO "original bank rolls" on ebay are more than likely just some commons rolled and made to look old. Especially when you see the add describe a rare or odd coin on the end. If the seller has enough knowledge to recognize that they would open it themselves. Best to stay away from them unless you are paying the value of a roll of common low grade coins plus a bit for the ones you can see.

Most rolls on ebay are scams, but I think this one is real. Would I buy it? No.

I see no indication it sold, it's back up again here... 361096922199

Quote:I see no indication it sold, it's back up again here... 361096922199 It definitely sold for $270.00. It is not surprising another roll has been listed by this seller. Many old time collections had more than one roll of the same date. There is a dealer I am in the negotiations for a half dollar for my type set who has a lot of original rolls and there are many dates/mints where he has multiples of a particular date/mm, one he has 14 rolls of that date/mm. Most of the pictures of the rolls show the coins laid out next to the wrapper. Original bank wrapped rolls yes, do all of the rolls have all of the original coins inside, probably not. It also has been opened and the coins looked at. See how tight the crimped end is on the end with the obverse showing and look at the end with the reverse showing. This end was opened. See how the paper is not round and tight as the other end. This is what the ends looked like of a bank wrapped roll that has been opened. It is extremely rare and highly unlikely that an original bank wrapped roll has never been opened by a coin dealer. He is going to open it and pick out the very best coins, replace them and then sell the roll.
