Quote: Regardless, there has never been a live person on circulation coins in the US Not strictly true: Calvin Coolidge appeared on the "Sesquicentennial" commemorative half dollar in 1926. IIRC, there'd been a few later examples of living people on US coins, but none of them were in any meaningful sense "circulation coins" - unlike the 1926 half dollar.

I too would like to see a dime design change. How about something which honors our military? A series which could feature Air Force, Marines, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, etc?
Let's honor those who serve.

Like I said, there has never been a live person on circulation coins in the USA. Commemorative Half Dollars were never intended to be circulated, although they sometimes were due to financial constraints or over-minting.
As for the issues about rounding, it works both ways. If the 5 and 1 cent coins were to be eliminated final totals 5 cents and under from the nearest dime would be rounded down and those 6 cents and above rounded up. In the whole scheme of things it all evens out in the end. Other countries, such as Canada, that have eliminated small coinage have done this and it works just fine.
I don't think they would eliminate the 5 cent piece soon, the penny could (should) be gone this decade.

After President Obama leaves office he would make a good replacement for FDR on the dime. With him being our first black president it would be fitting to honor him.

Let's honor those who serve. The usual countries that put soldiers on their circulating coins are either a) dictatorships or b) communist dictatorships. I'd stay far away from this one. Why not go with some nice landscapes? I like landscapes and the ATB series certainly shows that the Mint can do them well. Quote: I would suggest that everyone who proposes this extra taxation learn to be much more frugal with their own money and push with equal fervor the frugality of their state governments. I'm not sure that a lot of people could tolerate the added tax on their purchases.
The other thing that should be kept in mind is that the same taxing authorities could (through the use of recently expanded eminent domain) take your home if their think that they can make better use of the land by turning aroung and selling it to a developer who would builder higher end homes that you could not afford but the increase taxes would increase the same coffers that this proposal is trying to add to.
Let's think this proposal through better. A lot of times simple solutions lead to unintended results. And you should think your math through better. Why do people always bring this up? Here: Rounding is applied AT THE END of the transaction!!Let's make it direct: I live in Canada, a country where we have eliminated the penny. No, I do not pay an extra 7% on every transaction (or whatever) because rounding is applied at the end. How on Earth could this ever lead to the government expropriating your house? This is insanity.

Again, not always up, and in many places always down since cash is cheaper than electronic payments.

But I still stand behind my belief that no leader, even the first lady, should be on a coin. Our founding fathers never intended for us to. I would love to see the return of Lady Liberty.

As far as honoring President Obama on any coin, I do think that He has had enough honors (earned or unearned) during the course of his presidency.
The honor of being placed on the coin should not be decided solely upon the basis of race. Other factors should be brought to bear the least of which is race especially to a country where race is said not to be a factor and everyone is considered equal regardless of race, creed, or gender.
To propose otherwise is a disservice to what this country is supposed to stand for.

How on Earth could this ever lead to the government expropriating your house? This is insanity. Rounding occurs throughout the manufacturing process not just at the point of sale. Although you live in Canada where you seem to have eliminated the cent with success the initial suggesting made was to eliminate not only the cent, but also the nickel and quarter which would increase the cost of living. Besides while a lot of people believe that rounding is an up or down thing, rounding down cannot be proved unless in ivory tower thinking in a perfect world. That is a world that we do not live in except in pipe dreams. I have no problems with eliminating the cent if everything was priced in multiples of nickels which is not the case. The day that that happens all prices will be raised to the next highest nickel and to the lowest. But this is a subject not for this forum Especially on conversations of topics that have strayed to far from the original topic or intent.
