Before someone mentions it, let me go first: the logo "quoqunque jeceris stabit" translates to 'whithersoever you throw it, it stands' - possibly due to the way the three legs are spaced out so as the coin appears to be 'standing' whatever angle you look at it from..I said it first!

Those are really cool coins Matt. That 3-legged design is great. There's a name for it but I am not sure if I remember. A triskelion I think? All three are in great circulated condition. The stories they could tell.

P.S. After looking at your pics again I noticed that you may have put the reverse of your 1839 Penny in twice, no obverse.

Nice coins. Here is a site that explains what the three legs mean.

I realised I made the mistake of repeating the same pic twice just now after having a good sleep,
altered it so you can see the young Vic. head on the obv for the penny.

Just saw it on TV program coast of GB, isle of man residence is somewhat resilience, you can throw them anywhere and will still stand thats what one of the locals replied on his interview.

So they are a good, upright people who never sit down, okay nice to know..

Thanks Hussulo - yes, I always thought a three-legged man was strange.
At least he'd never lose an ass-kicking contest ;)

The Triskeles on the Isle of Man coins is really not a new thing. It has been on Isle of Man coins since the Lord Stanley coinage of 1709, and on most coinages since that time, even when IOM came under direct British rule in 1765.

But the Triskeles is actually a much older symbol, being a symbol of the island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. And it began being used on coinage deep in antiquity, notably on coinage of Syracuse:

Isle-Of-Man-Coins

This is an AR 8 Litrai from the reign of King Agathokleos of Syracuse Sicily, minted ca. 317 BC - 289 BC, notice the small Triskeles under the Pegasus on the reverse.

I cannot miss the thing! The I.O.M triskelion is almost an exact recapitulation
of the Syracuse design! I am totally wowed! :o

Someone who just vacationed there told me a little about the Isle of Man, a small island between Ireland and England...the first democracy in the world...now a haven for money laundering...makes cents to me!

Why do you say it's the earliest democracy? I think Iceland had the earliest parliament, the Althingi. Tynwald is just the longest running as I think the Icelandic one was broken up at some point during the struggles for power.
