So I bought this coin from a local dealer for only $15 (half price, it used to be $30). I got it without hesitation, but now I'm taking a second look. If you could give it a value as a genuine (dents and all) I would really appreciate it! What I posted this for is my suspicion that it may be counterfeit. The dents reveal a fresh shiny copper underneath a thin layer, and with a dial caliper, it measured 28.2 mm top to bottom and 28.9 mm left to right. What should I look for in a counterfeit of this coin, and was only $15 an accurate price for a genuine? Thanks! Edited by jsky 10/25/2014 8:24 pm

Can you post some close ups of the obverse (front) and reverse (back?) Hard to tell from that picture.

It appears genuine but yes, a reverse pic is needed.

Thanks for the responses, I was only concerned because of the shiny blemishes (especially on the leaves) as if the finish was artificially added, and the low price.

Not a bad price at all. You did good. And try to remember what you'ld look like if you were that old. Those Large Cents are tuff to find in any decent condition due to how soft they were and how old they are.

Looks genuine. It is an 1803 small date small fraction. Haven't tried to determine variety, don't have my references and straight on images would make it easier to do so. Even with the damage this coin is WELL worth the $15.

Alright, thanks everyone for your insight! I wasn't concerned that I payed too much, but that I paid too little for it to be genuine

Quote:... but am I seeing an 1805? From what I know: The 1803 and 1805 Large Cents dates are pretty different (The parts of the 3 are close to each other and usually "tilted left" (in both Large & Small Dates, IMO) and the 5 is stretched to the upper right (at least the ones I know): Comments? (I'm no expert on Large Cents, believe me!)

Bingo that showed me what I needed to see. S-256 early to mid die stage before the Cud developed over STA and with the arc crack on the reverse from D through the wreath and between ES light. Rarity 3
