My coin collection is getting too big to the point that I can't track the value. Allot of micelanious silver halfs, quarters, dimes, and graded commemoratives. I'm thinking about doing a big sell off in the spring and getting a double eagle. My question is if I got something that expensive how hard is it to unload? Is ebay dangerous to a seller with a $1500 coin? I've always wanted a double eagle in my collection but I don't want to buy something that could be difficult to unload. I know a dealer won't pay me retail? Thoughts?

Would a dealer buy it if it was only discounted by $200? I'm not looking to flip it.

A lot could depend on what double eagle you buy and what price.
Are you thinking a Liberty or St. Gaudens, a graded coin or raw circulated.
IMO you can buy a raw $20 gold in XF - AU for a little over melt ... Maybe $30 to $50 over.
When you go to sell a coins like that, you might get 10 to 20 percent below melt.

I'm looking at certified in a MS State Liberty I want a little bit of premium on it to hedge against a drop in gold prices

I like that strategy Brian. You can get a nice MS Liberty Head $20 piece for less that what the melt value was not that long ago.

 Depending on where you live and your relationship with you LCS, You may be able to trade. I have a shop here in Waterford, Mi and have had many people come in wanting to trade their bulk silver for higher end gold pieces. I don't mind trading, in fact I like when they come in. Remember, TIME IS MONEY. So unloading one coin is alot faster then unloading rolls of individual coins. All depends on exactly what you want to achieve. A high value numismatic gold coin or a gold coin around spot to simply minimize coin amounts. Anyways, My best advice I can give you is that I would think hard on what you want to do before you do. I tend to make impulse decisions that sometimes can't be undone. SO before you replace years of coin collecting with a single coin, Make sure its exactly what you want to do. If or when you decide to sell of your silver, Keep me in mind and maybe we can strike a deal. GOOD LUCK! Matt

@Copperpennyconnection:
I'm surprised that you say that you actually like people who trade low-end stuff for higher-end coins. My local dealer (Nice guy, been buying/selling for years with him) will turn away people who look to trade in a lot of junk silver, or low-end numismatic coins in for high-end coins (Especially Gold), he's fine with bullion as that's easy to clear out for a solid $2-$3 profit per coin. I've been trying to clear out the hoards of Junk Silver I've bought over the years and noone seems to want it. As you said, TIME is MONEY, so it doesn't make sense for a dealer to spend many weeks or months clearing out $100 of scrap silver when they can instead sell one double eagle.

First it sounds like the OP needs to dump a coin collection to even buy the gold, unless I misunderstood the opening of the thread. If that is the case, what makes you think that in 5 to 7 years your current numismatic holdings will not exceed a single gold coin value? Gold might hold for a long time to come but Numismatics is a growing and active hobby.
How often do you feel the need to check the value of your current collection? Catalog the coins once, a VERY fun project to take on right? Holding, cataloging, grading and whatnot. Than just check against Numismedia FMV or a grey sheet once a year.

I'm probably going to dump about 20% not the whole collection and I think at this point I've decided to get a AU certified three dollar gold peice. I like to check my values monthly. I think my end game is to sell all of it off at 60 and buy a retirement home in 25 years

>>>>Is ebay dangerous to a seller with a $1500 coin?<<<< To me it is more scary as a buyer of a $1500 coin Brian...... I am going to be shopping for a few 1907 eagles / double eagles in the future and I stay concerned of counterfeit coins in general on ebay. I have already gotten slightly burned with coins that have been cleaned, whizzed etc. Not all sellers fully disclose like they should and some are total crooks.

To answer your original question, YES. It sure was nice a long time ago when I could go go a coin show or coin store and see coins for sale for a decent price. Today, probably half are in slabs and we are expected to help pay for that. At coin shows tables are full of books on coins. Almost a book per coin it would appear. Some appear to be just a pile of info taken from other books. Sure liked the so called good old days when I was one of the very few that collected coins.

I would only buy a picture graded coin that I could match up on the NGC website. I sometimes use more reputable dealers on ebay like TNFC

Saw on APMEX that they were having a special, free shipping with all pre-33 gold. They had a dozen or so $3 Princess coins there ranging from VF to MS64 / $800 to $4900. Hard to believe but they had one with a mintage of 1500 for $1495. It was NGC AU Cleaned but still. Lower cost than mintage for a rare coin is hard to believe.
