Hello guy, I suppose it is very seldom to encounter an official taler without the name of the governor on it. Here is one:

The observe side only seen with the emblem and name of Electorate Mainz. The reverse shows the denomination and date simply. Who know why the design of this coin is so simple? Any idea is always welcome.

The coin is an official convention taler of that era, it weighs 27.84 grams, 40.3 mm, 83.3% Ag.

The Archbishops of Mainz where as Electors some of the highest ranking princes within the Holy Roman Empire (as a historical note: there were no 'governors' within the HRE, all the local rulers were sovereigns even the lords).
Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal was the Archbishop from 1774â€"1802, he probably felt that his arms (unique for each Archbishop) were sufficient on smaller coinage. There are gold coins with his portrait (and legend), eg -> https://www.kuenker.de/en/shop/stueck/51203

Thanks Medieval. If I was a subject of Mainz and possessed a taler like this one, I would miss who is the ruler of Mainz from the coin. This is hardly imagined in other German states. Was the occurrence of German mediatization and secularization related to the lack of ruler's title of the coin? I don't know. For a crown size coin, I still not see another coin with no ruler's name in the same era. So this coin is strange!

Do have to disagree, don't forget that the majority of people at the time could not read or write - the pictorial representation of the arms would be quite clear to the people.

There are plenty other Thaler size coins without a ruler's name, take the various 'sede vacante' issues from religious states and the issues of the free imperial cities, if you go through a catalogue of German coinage you will find plenty other examples as well.
