Anyone here got a good list of types of approx. ounce-sized dollars around the world used for trade and which countries they were used to trade between?

Thinking about making a Trade dollar collection.
Examples:

US Trade dollar
British Trade dollar
Austrian Maria Thaler
Japanese Trade dollar
Chinese Dragon
8 Reales
Morgan dollar (to an extent)
Peace dollar (to an extent)

How about a list of crown-sized or 5-franc-sized coins? These all followed roughly the same standard as well.

Good thread.

I have been wanting to build a collection of these ever since I picked out the French Indo China coin pictured above out of the junk foreign silver box at the LCS.

Speaking of that coin, what is up with the devil's tail looking thing on the obverse anyway? Is it part of an anchor?

From memory, Chinese silver coins were traded at a discount depending on what province they originated from.

There are three difficult coins in this category and they are as follow:

Japan Trade dollar - probably the most expensive coin in this series even in damaged condition

Japan counterstamped yen coin - officially chopmarked in Osaka and Tokyo Mint. There are chopmarked version of the Trade dollar but these are very uncommon.

Korea 1892 5 yang. Technically same spec as a Japanese 1 yen coin and these did circulate. There are some with chopmarked examples and are not common. I've seen a chopmarked 1893 1 hwan - mintage number is rumored to be just 77 after several thousand were melted down.

Buckeyecoinguy: You are so lucky you can get such a coin for spot! I don't even live near an LCS!

I totally want to make a Trade dollar collection. So much history. I could even get some chopmarked examples. Unfortunately, I would probably need to get the money first lol.
