I saw this 1895 Barber half dollar on ebay in an old green PCGS holder graded AU-50.

It sure looks nicer than that to me. There's a bit of wear on the hair below the LIBERTY, but the reverse looks very sharp.

What do people think? Is the grade right?

Thanks.

In my opinion, there is NO way that coin is an AU-50. Looks more like an AU-58. I think the seller feels it is under-graded, too, as he has priced it accordingly.

It seems in the old days of coin grading, the agencies were much more strict than they are now, which resulted in a lot of under-graded coins. The old rattlers are notorious for this.

That slab is very old so the coin was graded long time ago. With the industry new standards the grade should be better.

It would grade AU55 to 58 by standards in place today.

With just a touch of wear above the brow on the obverse and likewise on the leading edge of the wings...undergraded for sure...although I do love the older PCGS holders .

AU-50?

I'm not convinced that coin ever circulated.
