I have been a coin collector for a while but focused my attentions on my country and other commonwealth countries. I am wanting to get into more American coins but have a few questions that you can help me with. Do you have a $1 note and a $1 coin in circulation? Is the half dollar a standard circulation coin? Did that new shield penny ever take off? thanks guys, I look forward to hearing from you Edited by magpie 10/28/2014 7:18 pm

1.) Kind of. The dollar bill is used much more frequently than the coins, which are rarely used at all. 2.) No. The Mint has not made them for circulation since 2001 and they do not circulate that much. It would be uncommon to receive one in change. 3.) Yes. It is normal to receive them in change and rolls. Hope this helps.

$1: Yes, and no. Both are produced, but the coin is no longer produced for circulation, but they can (and sometimes do) circulate.
The half dollar hasn't been produced for circulation in over a decade. Does it circulate? Yes...but like the dollar coin, not often enough.
The shield cent is like any other cent. People don't care much about them. But I've never heard of anyone (other than on forums) complaining about the design.

$1 notes are what is commonly used in the States. Dollar coins were never popular to begin with, and they aren't made for circulation anymore. In my experience, I only see dollar coins used as change in public transit, hence some of us calling the "gold" small dollars "subway tokens"!
Half dollars haven't been made in at least a decade or two. I almost never see them in circulation.
As for the shield cent, they are EVERYWHERE due to their extremely high mintages (a few billion made a year) despite only being minted since 2010.

Halves have not been minted for circulation? I don't understand what that means. I got a few rolls from the mint last month and I've been spending them.
Does that mean they are minted, but not delivered to banks?

I actually got four Sacagewea dollars in change last week at a Chinese restaurant. That's probably the first time I've gotten any in, like, 10 years. Once in a great while I get a Kennedy half in change, probably becase cashiers just want to get them out of their register drawers. But both barely circulate. Americans seem particularly resistant to using $1 coins. $2 notes are also rarely seen in everyday commerce. A coin shop I frequent sometimes has Ikes at face, and I usually take a few to leave as tips (just to be a little different).

Quote: I am wanting to get into more American coins but have a few questions that you can help me with. AND Note that not all AMERICAN coins are USA coins. Remember that there is a North America, Central America and South America. Then too, we have different countries in each so you could try saving coins from some or all. Even here in the USA it is difficult at times to find Canadian or Mexican Coins. If your referring to USA coins, not sure how they would be available where your at. As to what we use, not many use the Half Dollar any more. Not a lot of people like or use those baby sized dollar coins either. Large Dollar coins are really becoming scarce and not used in change that I know of anymore. Every time people bring this up I always wonder why Mexican coins are never in my change.

In most cases, it's fairly safe to assume that when people speak of "Americans," they mean people living in the United States. I have a dear friend living in Peru, and when I pointed out to her that technically she is an American by virtue of living in South America, she laughed and said, "No, 'American' means United States."

Quote: Do you have a $1 note and a $1 coin in circulation? Unfortunately, yes. The note prevents the widespread use of the coin. The note needs to go. Quote: Halves have not been minted for circulation? I don't understand what that means. I got a few rolls from the mint last month and I've been spending them. Does that mean they are minted, but not delivered to banks? Correct. They are minted for collectors (direct sales) only. They are not released into the Federal Reserve for distribution to the banks.

Does that mean they are minted, but not delivered to banks? They haven't been minted for circulation since 2002. All halves since then have been produced in relatively small numbers for sale directly to collectors at a premium to face value either in roll sets, small bags, or mint sets. Any post 2001 halves found in rollsfrom the bank are coins that collectors bought for a premium, searched and then dumped at the bank.

I got two 50 cent pieces back in change at a football game (they were out of dollar bills) and it was the first time I'd seen them in circulation in at least 5 years. Too bad; I like a nice weighty coin like that.

when we say "American" here it refers to the USA, otherwise we say Argentinian etc. interesting how people from different countries have different definitions of words. I know a lot of people from the US think a kiwi is a fruit, hmm.
