Question-About-A-1717-German-States-1-Ducat

We bought this coin recently and I am having trouble convincing myself it is real. Here is some info about this particular coin. It is a 1717 1 Ducat from Mecklenburg-Strelitz KM-15.

NGC Info

Numismaster (click the Ducat)

Cat Info

The coin is suppose to be gold, but this coin, as well as all of the other pictures I've found do not look gold at all. It is 22mm in dia and weighs 3.6g according to my scale. Are there any experts here who know if there was a different version of this coin made in a different metal? Any info would be appreciated!

Here are some questions to get it going:

1. What is the pedigree?
2. Does the edge look modern?
3. What made you buy a ducat if it appears as silver?
4. Is there any yellowing in the devices?
5. I assume KM does not list any patterns in silver? You checked?

I do own a Prussian 1707 Thaler in copper with traces of gold mercuric amalgam wash struck from original dies.

We bought this coin over the counter along with some other scarcer German, though we believe some of them are fantasy issues. There were some genuine better coins in with this lot though. As far as yellowing in the devices, there is a rainbow toning (looks natural, not artificial) and there could be some yellowing underneath it but it's difficult to tell. The edge does not look modern.

1. It definitely looks spurious.
2. A Ducat has to be gold.
3. Quite a lot of modern copies (in gold and in silver) have been made of some ducats, I have myself one from Nuremberg but usually there is some indication of that on them.

Where did you buy them over the counter? Coin of antique dealer?
Show a picture of what you believe to be phantasy issues from that lot.

this is a contemporary silver restrike of the ducat dated 1717 on the bicentennial of reformation.
http://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?a...2&lot=938426

this was done with a lot of the "commemorative ducats and gulden from this periode and a lot of other (circulation) coins and medals at that time. they were used as patterns for the territorial lord or the governement. others have been struck in later times for rich or noble coin collectors and also a gifts or offical presents.

Thanks so much for your replies. I wouldn't be surprised if it is exactly what you posted, a contemporary silver reproduction. It is nice to see there is still a market for them though.
