So I figured I should start doing some work with some of the coins I have collected over the last little while. One project tht I thought would be fun was to try and make a complete set of nickel dollars. So over the past year as I have been going to banks on of the things I would pick up is the dollars. Last night I finally brought them out and started sorting by dates..... 3 hrs later and I was done. I started with the '68's.... This is where I need your help first..... I was looking at those coins until my eyes went blurry but from the pics in the charlton I cannot tell the difference between a large island and a small island... Any tips or links to other sites that discuss this would be appreciated.... Thank you!

Hi Ag, this is from my Charlton (1996), I don't know if it looks different in yours if it's a different year: So to my understanding a normal island is the usual large island, small island is almost no island, and no island is the island went missing. Maybe use a 1969 to compare, since I'm pretty sure there are no small islands in 1969.

The no island variety will have shorter waterlines, they won't be touching the canoe. The small island is just that, barely a small island, but with full water lines.

Here is a picture of my 1968 No Island, and I think it has an extra water line from looking at SPP's set. and a 1969 to compare.

That's a nice photo...
I was using the Charltons guide as well as a "SET" a friend of mine has.. that outlines the three varieties.. however trying to decipher between the regular island and small island... I'll pull out the '68's again tonight... and hopefully I can spot one... otherwise I will have to consider that the ones that I have are all just regular islands

Then there are the doubled lines varieties (DHL 1 and DHL 2).

Well I did the best I could to try and decipher the difference....
From the pics in the Charlton 67th ed. .. I figured the regular island looked like a pizza slice or equalateral triangle.... where the small island looked more like a graphing curve...
Never the less.. after going through the ones I had.. they all looked like they were of the normal island variety at this point.
--- up next the '69's...
Next question.. how can I tell the difference when looking at a coin between a circulation finish and an uncirculated finish... Sorry if these are such NOOb questions.... but for me there's still a very LARGE learning curve

Quote: Then there are the doubled lines varieties (DHL 1 and DHL 2). Nope. That is something that was already changed in Charlton catalogue and will be changed in CCN Trends. The DHL #1 is basically the "Extra Waterlines" (EWL). The doubled top horizon line (called DHL #2 by ICCS and older catalogues) can be found on ALL 1968 nickel dollars, except the "no island" variety (which is excess die polishing).

I am checking some of my 1968 nickel dollars. This is from the raft of nickel dollars I scopped up a few weeks ago at the RBC bank.

Nope. Polished die, but the normal island is still there...

^^^ But is the double top HL?
I had forgotten the change due to your section. But, Charlton still calls it DHL, not EWL. Which, seems to make no sense if all normal ones are DHL.

I think all top HLs are double to some degree, it seems.

By the way, is the small island a more recent variety than the no island? Went to the library and looked at the 1978 (it is outdated, I know, but nothing more recent) Nickel Dollars of Canada, and it doesn't list small island.
