Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and I can't say that I know much about coins, but I love casually collecting wheat pennies (as a cashier I would take the few I found each day).

With some research in mind, I always kept an eye out for irregularities. Recently I came across a 1928 Philadelphia penny with a strange detail near the top of Lincoln's hair. It is a curved line that looks at first like a scratch but is actually embossed.

Is it possible that this is an error from the striking? My other guess is that at some point in its life, something with a strong edge hit it with enough force to push the metal on its surface upwards. Although, it seems as though the details on either side of the ridge are untouched.

I hope this isn't too ridiculous of a question, thanks for your time!

K.J.

Looks like it is Wrapping Machine Damage. It affects many of the devices on the outer edge. The motto, then center BE on LIBERTY. The date. Note how the coin scratch is parallel to the rim? A sure sign of coin wrapper damage or vending machine machine damage. PSD

I don't understand. How could a machine raise the line? It is raised, right?

The line is incuse. Note how the light is at 12:00? See the shadow on the top of the area of the incuse line. If it were light in that location, then it would be raised. But the opposite is seen. So it is incuse. (pressed into the coin.) The metal maybe pushed outward, but it happened after the strike. PSD
