Off Center Or Misaligned Die?

Misaligned die. Why?

Because an off-center would have the same degree of shift on both sides. Off center means the coin was struck with the planchet out of collar and not centered between the dies.

A misaligned die is simply a case where the hammer die (obverse) is tilted slightly (or loose) in the press and leaves wierd looking rims on the obverse. Very rarely are these shifted off enough to be of value, but the way to tell if they are of value is if some part of the design is missing...on the obverse, of course.

Another hint...a true broadstruck or off center coin (they happen in the exact same way) that would usually have reeded edges - won't. Because it is the collar that makes the reeded edges, and off center or broadstruck coins are struck outside the collar. ONLY exception is a coin that was struck in the collar before being restruck outside the collar.
