I am in the process of picking up a Liberty nickel in a older ANACS Slab that lists it as a Breen 2564 Variety and I want to get it reholdered to the newer style slab. If I could, would it be better to keep the Breen number or use the FS 5-14.5 number or the PM-36A.1 number on the new slab. Would there be an advantage to changing the Variety designation on the holder? What would really be cool would be to use all 3 but I don't think they could fit them on there and they probably wouldn't do it either. What would you pick to use?

I don't think it would make much of a difference since all three designations describe the same variety. Personally, I would avoid Breen's ## just because he was a pederast.

I wouldn't use Breen numbers because they are way outdated. Much of what's listed in that book has since been either relisted by newer sources or has been debunked because Breen was wrong.

I agree with coppercoins, some books, even the CherryPickers Guide will use a Breen number as a reference after listing the FS number bu Breen is outdated. As Charles says, Breen numbers are for the most part outdated because Breen was incorrect on some of his designations. Where it gets crazy is that many of the good people who attribute coins have developed their own numbering systems. John Wexler uses WDDO numbers, the CherryPickers Guide uses FS# , Ken Potter uses VCR# and so on. Then there are still some old Breen numbers that are used. It seems that things are trending toward the FS# but many numbering systems are used. Thanks, Bill

A vast majority of the time when you see Breen numbers used currently it's because the Breen guide is the only place that lists whatever is being sold with the Breen number. Reason the Breen guide is the only place it's listed - because nobody else agrees with Breen that it's anything to bother listing. Six current sources against one that was published over a decade ago...you figure it out.

Yeah, it has taken over 30 years to clear up his mess - most of the way. There are STILL people who refer to his books when peddling garbage as valuable errors. Small bits of credit in recognizing a few decent valuable coins go his way, but an obvious lack of understanding the minting process is evident throughout.
Spadone was the first to recognize the "Bugs Bunny" die clash half dollar in a printed guide.
