Hi everyone, I was looking through my dad's collection and found this coin. It looks to be the size of a large penny. King George V is on one side and it is blank on the other side. The blank side is smooth. As usual, I apologize for the bad photos. I was wondering what your thoughts were. Thanks so much, Erin :)

I believe there is no way to ID this coin correctly, unless more details are visible on the reverse side.

Agreed, we need better images of just the coin, however it is most likely been sanded/filed off. there is no way to strike the coin and have a blank side.
Can you weight the coin by itself? this would also help to prove it is underweight or correct.
If there is a faint image on the one side, it might have been struck through something like grease or even fabric.

It is certainly possible to be struck on one side if 2 planchets where on top of each other, Uniface strike. Better pics may reveal a ghost type image on the blank side. But impossible to say for sure without good pics.

I think you're right, ace_ftw. You can see the marks on the edges of the coin from filing. Somebody sure put in some effort to make this 'error.' Here are some more pictures. The only camera I have is my iPhone. At some point, I hope to get an actual camera. But my extra cash goes to coins :D. Thanks again. Erin :)

^^ Agreed it would have a rim if it was some sort of blank planchet error.

Johndakerftw, you said the pictures were from an IPhone. There is a Macro Lens that you can use on an IPhone. I believe.

It never hurts to put the coin under a bright light before taking a pic...

I have a coin that is almost blank on both sides. I got from a passed in law. I remember reading on a thread about pocket pieces that old timers used to carry and rub for luck. I just attributed it to that and haven't looked into it any further. It is so worn you can't tell what it is. That's what I think you may have.

I will admit, I'm a photo noob :P. I'll look at the Macro Lens next time I go to take pictures.
I'm convinced it was filed down. In hand, the marks are very noticeable.
It's very unfortunate that someone would do that to a coin just to get an extra buck. Thankfully, my dad only paid $1. But, it would have been nice to see the original coin. I'll try to be smarter when it comes to error coins.
As always, thanks for your input. I really appreciate it!

Bob Levei, with your theory it would have to be worn and "polished" on both sides

Filing off one side is the first step to making a Love Token. It looks like someone never got around to doing the engraving though. So I guess it's a Loveless Token?

I wondered that. Just figured maybe they favoured one side. I will guess that's what I have then as both sides are worn off.
