I'm thinking of bidding on what I would consider a very expensive coin. But does it fit in with the rest of my set I'm building? I've talked about my Seated dime proof set in the forums a number of times so you may already be familiar with it. In fact my avatar to the left is from this set. I've been working on it for a few years now and I'm more than half way complete.

I'm very fond of proof type coins with great eye appeal especially with color. A few of the coins already in my set don't really fit in with this concept and I'll likely look to sell them and replace down the road.

I'd like to get your opinions on how well this coin might fit in with my set. The coin may very well end up bringing in the neighborhood of $10,000 at auction so needless to say I need to think hard on whether to bid on it or not.

The one area that I've focused on with this coin is the fact that miss liberty is fairly dark sitting on a lighter background. Most of my other dimes tend to be with a lighter liberty sometimes on a darker background. Aside from that I feel it's a very beautiful coin.

I frequently bounce these types of questions off of one of my sons but I usually get something like "wow, that' really cool" so I'd probably get the same answer this time as well. I thought it might be helpful to hear from the CCF this time around and get your thoughts?

Feel free to talk me from the ledge, or spur me on, whatever your thoughts.

Here is a link to the coins currently in my set. 4 of the coins are out getting TrueView images right now so no images on those yet.

And here is a link to the coin in question.

Thoughts?

Ok. I broke the links out separately from the text, maybe that will make a difference.

That 1880 is an absolute GEM. Amongst best looking coins I have ever seen. Fields look perfect and the toning is jaw dropping. That's a coin that can be a centerpiece of a collection, and I have a feeling that coin will bring close to 10k. Eye appeal is outrageous.

By the way, I love the 1882 and 1883 in your collection as well. Amazing set.

It sold in a Legend Morphy auction of Simpson coins in April of this year with a realized price of $9694

Thanks jdmern. Regarding the 1883. I too really like it, however it's one of the ones that I've considered selling down the road. It's quite beautiful in hand, the reverse is almost deep cameo but I've never felt it fit in that well with the rest of the coins in my set from it's lack of color. The 1863 and 1868 have even less color, in fact I have those two up on ebay now.

All 3 of those coins are quite beautiful but the longer I own them the more I feel they don't quite fit in with the rest of these coins.

all good now, very nice collection indeed. The 1880 you are considering would definitely fit with your current pieces extremely well. I say BUY it.

With a population of 2 in that grade level as well as the stunning beauty of this coin, you will not be disappointed in the future come time to sell shall that be your intention.
You might want to upgrade that holder though ;-)

Thanks for the comments so far. Any thoughts on how dark Miss Liberty is? Do you think that detracts from the coin at all?

Those coins are incredible. As you mention the new coin would be darker then your current coins. I lean towards liking the toning on the coins you have over this new one. That said, it would be a great addition to you set. Good luck. I had enough trouble spending over $2000 on a Walker.

I did notice you have some nice coins for sale. I have my eye on a couple. I have not bought on ebay in well over 6 years so for now I will just look.

Thanks tpg22. If I do end up bidding on it I'll probably need a stiff drink before doing so.

@ vermontensium

Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure I follow you on the holder upgrade part?

A stiff drink would be the the first of many perhaps...I will say though if you have the ability to purchase then you should as you will certainly add a great coin to a great collection and feel a huge sense of pride in it. Either way you go though is your choice to live with :)

@ dsfreeworld

Thanks for the encouragement. Of course making the decision to bid and being the successful winner don't always go hand in hand but your point is well taken.
