I recently added this 1880-CC Morgan to my collection.... It fit in my budget and after receiving it, I was very pleased with my purchase. While looking for this year there seemed to be more MS than circulated. Is there a reason for this. Thanks!

It's not worthwhile to have circulated not key-Morgan's slabbed. Otherwise, it's common to see a large number of Morgan's that are UNC.

Quote: It's not worthwhile to have circulated non key Morgan's slabbed. Otherwise, it's common to see a large number of Morgan's that are UNC. The first sentence in the above quote is generally true with the exception that if a collector has a particular VAM he/she wants authenticated with that VAM designation on the label. The second sentence was not finished, for the common dates you will usually find more mint state CC dollars that have been graded than not.

Thanks, but I always thought that the 1880-CC was not a common date. I know it is not the rarest, maybe middle of the road?

Like the overwhelming majority of Morgan issues, not many 1880-CC's ever circulated. Heck, more than 20% of the entire 1880-CC issue was in the GSA sales of the 1970's. Over 130,000 coins, mostly Mint State.
All the same, it is an added-value issue for the low mintage, especially when compared to years like 1883 & 1884. If you were the buyer from the Heritage auction, you did well with it. Looks like VAM-8 to me.

Thanks SsuperDdave, yes I did purchase it at the Heritage auction, and I am glad to hear I did good! I just went to the VamWorld site and it is a VAM 8, the crud in the CC's, little line under the 8, and all the other pictures matched, Thanks for the info.

Solid purchase Wornslick. I've yet to add a Carson City S$1 to my collection.

I wouldn't pay to have a coin like this graded, but since someone else already assumed the expense the PCGS certification is a plus. Counterfeits do exist and you know yours is guaranteed authentic. Nice acquisition!

The decision to slab a coin is typically based on its rarity not condition - perfectly reasonable to slab an 1880-CC in VF or higher

An 1880-CC in XF-45 is somewhat of a conditional rarity. Perfectly reasonable to slab it, IMO. An 1885-CC in VG I would definitely slab, because it is MUCH rarer in that condition than mint state.
