What are separation lines and what do they look like? If anyone has a picture of some that would be great.

Bryan1315,
I don't know much about error coins, but the book says to look for separation lines, on the date, for the 1980 doubled die Lincoln Cent. The picture that the book provided didn't seem to show anything.

ok that is what I thought you were referring to, the split lines will be like 2 separate lines not just lines touching them. This picture is not the Lincoln Cent you are referring to but here is a picture of a Morgan showing the split serifs on a VAM-70

I don't have any pictures of Machine Doubling but I am sure if you look in this area of the forum you will find more than your fair share of Machine Doubling pictures

Note the difference between the separation on the silver dollar and these Lincoln Cents. On a doubled die the letters are increased in size and not just smeared as in Machine Doubling. Machine Doubling is just that. Machine loose and moves will the strike is made. Varying degrees of Machine Doubling is noticed from coin to another. On a real doubled die, the same separation is noticed on every coin made from the die.
Note on the image below the difference.

The letters are doubled and increased in size.
