Looks to me like a complete fake (nice job, though), or the mint mark was added (notice the discoloration).

Says he bought it at an auction--wonder how much he paid for it?

$50 opening.
That's the true mark of a 16-D.
No need to get it authenticated.

At least he is honest, saying he doesn't know if it's real

Check out the designer's initial...looks like something under that "W". Don't believe real Mercs have that...

There is actually supposed to be an A under the W; that is normal.

Whaddaya-Make-Of-This-Ebay-1916-D-Merc?

Just that normal dimes are so small it's hard to see.

I say this is a very well done fake; however the surfaces looks too perfect, too shiny. The mint-mark is way too small, and not in the right position. To top off all this, the rim has (casting?) lines that looks suspicious.

I bet the bidiots will be all over this one before you know it.

If the Seller had the slightest inclination that the coin was a genuine 16-D, he would have sent it off for TPG.

He knows it's not real, we know it's not real.

He also knows that there is some fool out in eBayland that cannot resist bidding and buying this "coin" 'cause it's such a "good deal". He hopes they buy it, put it in their album and forget about it for the next 180 days.

If the Buyer returns it, the Seller has the "I said I didn't know if it was real or not" excuse in his pocket. As far as ebay is concerned, that, and the refund, is all that matters.

discoloration around the mintmark is the telltale sign this coin was altered. Plus, I don't know what you guys think, but the mintmark looks too flat.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Based on his commentary, he seems to know how rare a 16-D is.

But based on everything else, he doesn't have a clue as to how to regard a real 16-D in this condition.

A little knowledge is a ridiculous thing.

You should contact seller saying it's almost 100% fake.

A very poor fake. The facial proportion and the nose are not correct.

Here is his response when I asked him how much he paid for and that it could be a fake:

"I didn't pay thousands for it and that is why I put in my description that is a very commonly altered coin. The only way to know for sure is to have it graded."

In other words... "I know nothing!" --Sgt. Schultz
