I recently took a closer look at this 1943D steel cent. Yes, I know that you'll say it's Machine Doubling and maybe plated, but I never noticed the details before and thought it was cool enough to share. Check out the toning! Has anybody seen tripling before on these? (on the bottom of the E in WE on this one)

Yes, the toning looks exactly like this

All three toned similarly. I bought them for 75 cents in 1972, and now they're worth millions.

Extreme die wear. Keep in mind this was steel planchets on steel dies, thus the dies took a harder beating that year.
Rest in Peace

LOL

I've never seen any of those toned. They're pretty and a set of three -- maybe not millions but they're cooler than average for sure.

coop, thanks for reply, yes, I've seen you post that about the steel dies/planchets on other 1943 threads (I searched and read them all). I've seen it mentioned on other sites too. I thought the tripling of the E might be interesting to somebody.

Buddy, yeah, I was trying to be funny. I looked at a bunch of these on ha.com and didn't find any toned like this. Perhaps something to do with how they've been stored (42+ years in the same 2x2/album page). Not sure why they bothered with replating these, as you can see they still only sold for $.25 each back then. There were several examples on ha.com with very similar "extreme die wear" and almost the same die crack, such as http://coins.ha.com/itm/lincoln-cen.../1169-3365.s - MS68, sold for $3220.

Well, I took the pictures such as they are and figured might as well post them. I have ANACS grade/slab them just for fun, since I have a few others to grade.
