I just scored my first Hawaii Volcano ATB Quarter, from a vending machine!

My boss took in $31 in antique silver today, including Peace dollars, Morgans, mystery "trade pieces" with the Morgan face on them, two Trade dollars, and whatever the pre-trade coin was, from 1800 and 1804. She's floating on air.


The worst part? THAT CUSTOMER WAS ALMOST MINE. I SHUT DOWN MY REGISTER TO FINISH A SCHEMATIC ONLY ABOUT THIRTY SECONDS PRIOR. Someone needs to make me a ragey-stampy-sobbing-uncontrollably emote.

Williamson, this person apparently knew. He asked if he could "change out some money." I asked my boss if she thought they might be stolen and she said she'd ask one of our regulars who is a cop if anything matching this description has been reported missing/stolen, but I guess this has happened to her several times over the years--she told several people they were handing over valuable things and was told "yeah, I don't want the hassle of a coin shop" (I live in an area where many of my neighbors could wipe their rears with a thousand bucks and never miss it, so that attitude sounds pretty plausible to me). Given the condition of the coins (one is an 1800 that could have been minted last year) and the variety (from 1800 through 1923), I'm guessing it was a collection. If it's not stolen, guaranteed this person knew what they had. If it is stolen, better we have it and can turn it in than that a fence or the original thief still has it, and if it's not . . . well, she lucked out, didn't she?

Not all of them are AMAAAAAAAAAAAZE (I wouldn't call any of them MS; the 1804 looks like it might have gotten into the hands of someone who decided to whizz it, then was snatched from them at the first brush of the dremel by a horrified collector screaming "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" and there is moderate wear on the Peaces), but they do all look collection-quality. I posted about them elsewhere and my boss may be joining us (I directed her to the forum)--hopefully we will get better pictures than my phone provided, and we can all ooh and aah (and hopefully not ohhhh and waaaah).

Ouch! Windchild, thanks for the heads-up. Consensus on my other thread is that my boss and I were both had. I'll see if she'll sell me a couple of the fakes for $3-5--I've had real Peaces and Morgans in-hand before, even own one of the former, and NOTHING suggested to me that these were counterfeit (although, not being an expert, I'm sure there are subtle diagnostics I missed), so having these in the forum's collective "black cabinet" would be a good idea.

And then if someone wants them (I know we have a couple of black-cabinet collectors), they can have 'em. Now that I know they're fakes, they're good enough to scare me.

Ohhh, daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang. Still, with three others being definitely fake (there are the two weird ones, plus a "1900 Walking Liberty dollar" and there are no typos in that description) and two of the others being common counterfeits ( Trade dollars), I'd have to say you're on the money--pun not actually intended, although I giggled when I realised what I'd just typed.

I found a 2000 p Sacagawea dollar in the till on Saturday, in Ottawa Canada! I know it has a mintage of 767 million but I still never expected to see one here. (looked like it had been circulating for a while too)
