I found this in change a long time ago and was wondering whether it was gold plated or put through some kind of chemical dip. What do you think?

I say it looks plated to me but I can't be 100% sure with the scans of the coin being so small

If the coins appearance is what I see in the pictures I'm leaning toward polished .

I will wait for better pics .

It's solid Gold.
Easy. Weigh it. If it weighs more than it is supposed to, it is plated. If not, polished and or shined with some chemical.
Remember your cent is a combination of Copper, Tin and Zinc. That is another name for BRASS. If other stuff added it becomes BRONZE. If you polish such coins they shine like that.
If you don't have a scale, make a balance beam scale. Place a popsicle stick on the end of a 6 sided pencil until it balances. Place a drop of glue there. Allow to dry. Place a pre 82 cent on one end of the stick. Place your Gold cent on the far other end. If they balance, yours is just shinned or polished.
AHHH, but if it is Gold.

Copper cent weighs 3.11 grams +/- .13 grams. Weight added by gold plating .0005 grams. Trying to detect it with the typical digital scale that weighs to no better than 2 decimal places, priceless.

A copper alloy ta contains Tin is a bronze no matter what other metals it contains. A copper alloy with Zinc is a brass unless it contains tin as well. A 1967 cent contains no tin so it is a brass, not a bronze. Minor issue because at those concentrations the only way to definitely tell what they are is with an xray defraction SEM.

Conder101: Please contact Whitman and tell them that on page 118 of the 2008 Red Book their statement of the coposition of a 67 Lincoln Cent is wrong. It states .950 Copper,.050 Tin AND Zinc. And as you stated, that is not correct.

Weight added by Gold plating is .0005 Grams is possible but any weight added by plating anything is dependant on how much plating is added. You could actually double the weight of a coin by heavily plating it with Gold if you wanted to. For example when I have a bumber on a car Chrome plated I have it done in excess to prevent any futher damage to that bumper. Plating anything can be done continuously if desired.

By the way the mention of that coin being Gold plated was intended to be a joke. Why would anyone Gold plate a cent?

And a footnote clarification is that the normal formulae for Brass is considered with 1% Tin and 30% Zinc. However, these proportions can be varied pending on how the final resolution of surfaces are required.
Bronze, although also has preferred proportions, usually also contains miscelaneous other metals and the Tin. In many instances even non metalic substances are added such as Silicon.
Again, numerous different proportions of substances are added to Brass or Bronze pending a final requirement.

If anyone would like me to turn their penny 'gold' send it to me along with a SASE. I just learned how to do it and it is pretty cool. I included one with each of my auctions that ended on Sunday but don't tell Gary or Dustin--it's a surprise
