Hey there everyone, hope you are all doing well. I recently acquired this coin and was wondering if I could get a little insight on it. Thanks in advance! What is the potential value or rarity and demand?

It says on the package that it is from the Morgan Mint?

It's a Dutch East Indies Duit copper and never Minted in New York but supposedly circulated in New York city as the Dutch settled there.

Appears to be a replica with little/no value.

Here is one on ebay.

The copper Duits can be rough-looking like this. I don't see why it couldn't be real - there are plenty of them available and you can get them for as little as a few dollars apiece in this condition on ebay (I recently sold some, myself).

They are fairly common. There would be no reason to replicate them.

It is a coin issued by the Dutch East India Company for use in their possessions in what is now INDONESIA. These were never intended for and probably never used in New York. Yes the Dutch did settle New York (Dutch WEST Indies), but notice the date on your coin 1754. Most of these duits that you will see being sold as "New York Pennies" are dated in the 1750 to 1790's. The British drove the Dutch out of the New York area by 1690, long before these coins were ever struck.

Now in the late 18th and early 19th centuries a lot of foreign coins did circulate in the colonies/states, but mostly Spanish colonies, French and British. If one of these did happen to make it all the way around the world from where they normally circulated and did pass in circulation, it would have been as a farthing not as a penny.

Now the Dutch did still have a presence in the western hemisphere and it might have circulated there, but that would have been in the Caribbean area not New York.

I'm given to understand that the Morgan Mint issue of this type used real coins - as has been said, they're not uncommon. So, as a gift I'd call this a pretty valuable addition to your collection.

Yes they are cheap, but they are interesting. At one time I actually saw a date set someone had put together. They were all circulated but they had chosen pieces with smooth surfaces and nice brown color. It was a very pleasing and not a whole lot of money. but it wouldn't be a real easy set to put together because it would take awhile to find nice pieces.

Some more information on your coin, it is KM 152.3 issued for the Dutch East Indies by the Dutch Province of Zeeland.

These Duits were produced by the Dutch government (Crowned Arms of Holland, a left facing rampant* lion), West Friesland (two left facing lions passant**) lions , Gelderland (shield with two rampent lions, one right facing one left facing) , Utrecht (shield with bend dexter*** supported by two lions), and Zeeland (Top half of the rampant lion bottom half of the shield is waves).

These Duits began in 1726 and lasted through 1794 They comein both copper and silver but the silver oneswere mostly made as collector or presentation pieces. Many did enter circulation but probably passedas a higher denomination. the copper coins wermade in very large numbers and circulated extensively. The high mintages keep them low cost today and in VF most issues catalog for under $10. The highest is a KM 136 1756 from West Friesland at $50 in VF. This is a one year only variety. (There is also a 1741 Utrecht piece which is unique,so you can forget that one.)

There are probably a couple hundred coins in the complete copper set and it includes many overdates and varieties.

* Rampant, lion is reared up on its hind legs.
** Passant, Lion is on three legs with one fore paw raised.
*** Bend dexter, A band sloping down from upper left to lower right.
