Some bidders just have more money than brains, I guess. I have often stated my dislike of 'slab collecting' but coins like this is exactly what TPG is for. Someone is in line to receive a very expensive lesson, and I am glad it is not me.

Makes me wonder if maybe it's better to not report and let the buyer get burned and he can then keep ebay busy post-auction. Back in the earlier days of ebay you could contact a bidder directly and warn them.

By not allowing bidders to communicate with each other has made it very easy for unethical sellers to get away with this sort of garbage since ebay does not employ anyone with any knowledge or understanding of numismatics.

Quote: Some bidders just have more money than brains, I guess. It's up over 2 grand now. X___X Stuff like this just gives the entire coin hobby a bad rep. And there seems to be more blatant fraud happening all the time.

You'll find the identical fake for sale, straight from the China source, on aliexpress.com. For $1.71 (they're on sale!)

That 1856 is currently at $7600 $8200 $9000 A raw coin with small pictures (and wrong details) should raise a few flags. Quote: By not allowing bidders to communicate with each other has made it very easy for unethical sellers to get away with this sort of garbage Yeah--I used to track auctions like this and warn the high bidders. That's impossible now.

Where is the delete button on ebay? The low feedback score should be an immediate tipoff

A lot of the bids are probably from shills running it up for the Seller. All it takes is to catch one fish that bites hard on the hook. ebay has gone great lengths to "protect" Buyers from "evil" people like us that used to warn them about coin/currency scams. Hidden ID's, can't contact anyone unless you're in a transaction with them, hidden feedback transaction ID's, etc etc etc. If ebay could get by with it they'd make all transactions completely anonymous and not reveal who the Buyer or Seller was, or where either was located, until after payment had been made.

I did used to get spam from people who would see what I bought and offer me more of it. So I can see why they had to hide some things for that reason. ebay is just too big, which is both the biggest pro and con. (sometimes emphasis on the "con")

That fake is atrocious. It gives even the most mediocre counterfeiters a mark on their reputation.
