I've got three tripods (for other photography uses) and I can't seem to figure out how to use them for coin photography. One of the legs always seems to get in the way, or the camera ends up blocking the lighting. So before I pull the trigger on buying a copy stand, is there anyone here that has found a way to use a tripod in coin photography? I'm mostly looking to just get my shots to the point where other members can come up with a grade for the coin without having to worry about the images not being sharp, due to me holding the camera.

Thanks

I have NO problems using a tripod to take coin pics.
Here is my setup.

Your problem used to be mine also.
That's why I got an inexpensive copy stand.

Do any of your tripods have the capability of reversing the camera mount post so that the camera mount is between the legs of the tripod? This is the classic way to do macro with older tripods, but I'm not sure how many newer ones are capable of doing this.

Ray, I just checked to see if any of my tripods could reverse the camera mount and sadly, none of them can.

trout1105, I like your setup. What lights are you using? It looks like your setup would produce very nice coin pictures.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

I've said this before: You can convert a PHotograph enlarger stand to a copy stand. Often that option is cheaper than a Tripod or a dedicated Copy stand. I have since discovered that Kaiser and Durst Enlargers have a "universal" mount. That means you can remove the enlarging apparatus and install a copy arm in its place. Infact you can buy the Kaiser Copy arm brand new:

http://www.amazon.com/Kaiser-RA-1-C...ser+copy+arm

However it doesn't take much to convert Enlarger stands from other manufacturers to to a copy stand. As I have posted in the past my copy stand is an old Minolta colour enlarger. What I hadn't realised is the minolta is probably the hardest to convert!

Heres some options from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-SUPER...em43d00d7a78

Heres one that includes an enlarging lens

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Beseler-Cad...em2c90fcb390

And the real winning option is this one ( just dismount the enlarger and mount your camera( you may need a cheap thread adapter):

ebay isn't the cheapest option as these things a heavy and the postage costs are a killer. Visit pawn shops and Camera shops that have a second hand department. YOu never know some one might even pay you to take one away!
