If you had some of the new gold dollars without the etching on the edge, how would you go about getting them authenticated and sell them?

First thing to do would be to obtain an accurate weight. If metal has been removed from the edge, the weight will be low. If the weight is accurate, send them to a third party grader for certification. You can submit to NGC through ebay, ICG and ANACS take direct submissions, and PCGS is only through a dealer or a membership club. Which one are you referring to- Washington or Adams? Adams is the rarer of the two.

Not sure which these are. I'm checking for a co-worker's brother. How do I contact ICG or ANACS (you have a link)? He has 10 or 12. About how much are they worth?

Wow, 10 or 12? That would be a red flag to me on authenticity... For worth, Washinton smooth edge errors are down to about $65-75 dollars unless they come back MS65 or higher (MS66 can go 200+). Adams smooth edges are running $700 to $1000 depending on quality.

Links for the grading companies:
ICG: http://www.icgcoin.com/
ANACS: http://www.anacs.com/
NCG: http://www.ngccoin.com/
PCGS: http://www.pcgs.com/

Grading costs money, so get those coins weighed on an accurate scale first, no sense in wasting money of they are just ground off edges... If the coin is less 7.9g, it's almost sure a fake, if it 8.1g or slightly more, most likely real. :)

I'd recommend going to ANACS. In order to submit to PCGS, you'll need to join their club. Same with NGC. PCGS will fetch you the most money, though, so if you're sure they're authentic join the club and send them in to PCGS.

First thing, they are not gold. They are a gold colored metal alloy. That gold coins message is a marketing ploy to get people more interested. Secondly, there are more and more errors showing up. I would not get this certified. The fee can run anywhere between 20-35 bucks for the case. Coin is not even worth that really. I would just sell as is on ebay, if still possible. That's my opinion

Huh?

With all the fakes out there I would definitely get them certified if they're real.

$10 a coin from ANACS is sufficient and the investment will definitely be returned in my opinion.

First step is to post good quality photos of the edge on the coins here on the forum for an opinion. No sense wasting signficant money on sending them in if they can be identified as fakes by the people here. If after seeing the picures we believe that they probably ARE real then it might be worthwhile to send them in.

You could weigh and measure the coin to find out if the error is real. The weight of a Presidential dollar should be 8.1 grams. The diameter is 26.5 millimeters. If the size and the weight is less, then it could be a fake. I would still have it graded by a TPG.
