Is it just me or does anyone else see obverse tooling

If it was tooled, they followed the original contours with exquisite precision. I think they just used uncommonly good lighting that's adding extra contrast to the devices.
And like the sainted Eric P would own a tooled coin. Yeah, right.

Agreed p. Yeah, the lighting may be causing the effect.

I have to agree with P.
I looked the coin up in the NGC regristry and the coin looked different there. It's just the lighting.

If you look at the coin from the NGC website:
http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/i...=2046415-037

This is one UGLY looking coin that is severely corroded/environmental damage. Without the eric P provenance, this coin wouldn't fetch $300.

I too thought there was corrosion. Look at the spotting and that pit behind her eye.

The purple coloring is active corrosion. All the pitting was caused by a burnishing that removed much of the original corrosion, but, the remaining corrosion was still active and has left the coin in this dismal state. I've seen this often, especially on PCGS (Old Green Holder)OGH copper coins with straight grades.

Side note: I refused to purchase any of the Eric P coins at the auction. Most were way over graded and many had problem coins in straight grade holders. NGC gave favoritism to this collection so as not to lose it to PCGS.

It's pretty sad that they race to throw these coins in holders just because of the pedigree/competition.

You and I would know the difference as well as anyone who actively collects early copper.

It's from one of the preeminent EAC dealers Chris McCawley, so I'd think his pricing is probably right on the money for the Sheldon variety. I see some others online at various EAC sellers (most are higher condition for $5K and up.

I haven't checked auction prices realized for S-166 in similar condition, but I don't have to - the price that is being asked for that 166 seems too high (to put it mildly). It is not an appealing example of a fairly common variety.

I much prefer my S-166 even with some planchet damage and uneven strike, and it was a lot cheaper.
