There are a lot of bad coins tonight including a few for novices, like the next one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121489063492

The seller says in his description;

Quote:
In my opinion there are some elements which make me believe that it is a fake.

Who would bid on this coin?

Notice someone has bid $100. They have a feedback of 193.

In this case, what Class would this coin belong to?

What can you tell is wrong with this coin - that does NOT include the design?

The coin appears to have a "lip" around the perimeter instead of the denticle's running off the face of the coin, as if struck in a collar. ( this in addition to the completely incorrect design elements.)

Knowingly selling fakes on ebay is prohibited, yes? Doesn't the statement "In my opinion there are some elements which make me believe that it is a fake." indicate that the seller is knowingly selling what s/he believes is a fake?

Yes, I understand, Buyer Beware but this maybe crosses a line?

jfransch - The answer is correct - this is an in collar flat strike - not a screw press.

The owners at ebay are no longer interested in enforcing that line. The ebay counterfeit policy was a foolish policy anyway - at least in my opinion.

Selling Counterfeits is NOT a problem if they are legal to own and are properly described.

What is illegal are counterfeits of current legal tender items, replicas and forgeries made after 1974 that do not comply with the HPA (applies to US only) and of course items that constitute fraud.

Those are the items that we tried to stop when I worked for ebay. But we did too good a job and the bottom line was impacted. So we were terminated.

If I had to choose between a no counterfeit policy and a let the buyer beware policy - I would prefer the latter.

The wear pattern on the coin is not how it would happen in real life, eg centre elements on obverse show substantial more wear than the crown above it.
