I am not asking about this as if I think it has value or anything, I am just curious what is up with this cent. It is pretty beat up but what is going on with it I don't think has anything to do with the wear. It has a pretty deep channel running part way down the coin. As you can probably tell by the picture the letters in the channel seem to be "Taller" then on the higher parts of the field. I am pretty sure there is no glue or anything on the coin(tried acetone). The blurriness on both sides of the channel is from shooting the picture through a loupe. Any idea whats up with it?

The die was gouged. Gouges like these are somewhat common, but these are deeper than most I've seen. I would imagine a small premium as a curiosity, but it's not a barn buster.

Hope they are clear enough, took them free hand as my tripod is not here right now. First picture is as straight on as I can get without blocking light(camera needs to be within about an inch to macro focus). Second picture is about 30 degrees from edge on.

Those are RR tracks made to commemorate our great RR system.
Wierd line running through A and I in the lettering on the reverse. Odd coin for sure.

I wanted to see if I could see evidence that the cent was struck over something else. But I see nothing that indicates that. I would go for the gouges in the die theory at this point.

Thanks for posting the reverse.

The line through the A & I is just a scratch.
