Are all of them the same or are they all different? They could be a series commemorating important dates through the past 200 years, running up to the bicentennial. There are thousands of tokens and medals that were cranked out during a 3or4 year period so people could make a buck. Google the images for the bicentennial tokens or medals and you will get more images than you will want to look thru.

They look like a set of gas station/store giveaways if they are different reverses.

Looks to be some kind of a give-a-way set of tokens. Probably brass or aluminum.

They were issued by just about every oil and publishing company that had a marketing department.

Little to no value.

There are people that collect them. Don't know what story he told you but they have some value. Not a lot and more so to a collector of the bicentennial souvenirs.Since it sounds like you have a complete set. If you want to try to move them ebay would probably give the widest group of buyers.
