This has been on my mind for the past month or so, but I suspect it may be a very real dark cloud (IMHO) on the horizon of numismatics. What are your thoughts on having to pay to talk coins with (*very knowledgeable, and big egos) individuals. I mean true experts in each aspect of coin collecting. Folks who would never steer you wrong and would be helpful to a fault. A forum/site like Rush Limbaugh's or Bull (LOL  ) Bill O'Reilly's might not be too far in the future where one can access general information and then for a monthly fee one can get access to EXCLUSIVE HELP and Helpful Information. If people have the knowledge and experience and can't make a living hocking their books, their tv appearances, and cameos in made-for-tv movies then they aren't worth the salt that butters their biscuts.

It'll probably happen, we're already paying them to grade our coins. But, why not just ask questions on CC? Our experts know as much or more than anybody else without the attitude that goes with it.

Never will happen. Coin collecting is a different type of investing then say...stocks. People pay big bucks for consulting work but with coins it's a different story I think. You won't find a family friendly stock forum online such as CCF. But if someone wants to start paying me for my 2 cents.....I'll e-mail you my PayPal addy.  |

Business must be pretty bad, if numismatic experts charge to talk. I can't see this happening anytime soon. Who would pay to hear someone talk about coins?

I've found that the "experts" in the bust half collecting field are just bursting with knowledge and are itching to share it. I can't imagine people like Sheridan Downey and Edgar Souders charging to talk coins, since they seem to enjoy helping out collectors.

I think people do it without realizing it.
Havn't you ever spent an hour or two hanging out
in your local coin shop talking coins and felt
funny leaving without making at least a token
purchase?

As someone mentioned in a previous thread, since Mom and Dad are kind enough to host this forum with great modesty, you could consider making a contribution here  . As a disclaimer, I recently made a small contribution to the forum- where else would someone let me use as my avatar a coin with a cute little guy known as "the decapitator"  ? I figure if they are kind enough to let me post my gibberish they deserve some recognition . |

I have e-mailed and received very timely responses from Q. David Bowers, James Taylor and a few years back David Hall. None of them asked to be paid for answering my questions and seemed to enjoy the dialogue! Peace, Mike  |

I do hope I'm wrong and all of your responses offer encouragement that indeed I am. But, the idea of a forum with a monthly fee has has been more than kicked around of late.

There's a coding forum that has ingeniously allowed Google to come in and spider topics, but does not allow anyone else in unless you have a paid subscription. So you Google say "refreshing a div using javascript", the first result and the snippet shown looks exactly like what your looking for. The url looks exactly like a forum topic. You click and you're redirected to a landing page that shows the original post in the topic and tells you if you want the answer, you have to buy a subscription. "Pay now" button right in your face.  |

I'm a little confused with the question. It sounds more like this would be a TV or Radio show. Where people would call, email or write in questions and they would be answered via that media. Called in questions would be directed to an expert. If this is the idea, not sure how it would all work out since there would have to be an expert on practically every type coin available constantly. Also, the so called expert would have to be a personable type person so as to not insult people. Also, why would anyone pay for the ability to ask a question once a month or year. And if charged per question, I think the greatest majority of people would just look it up via the internet. If this was to be an internet situation and pay would be required, I think this would fail also for the same reason.
Right now a person can already go to specialty coin forums and ask exactling questions about a specific coin and for free.
Then there is to me the problem of most experts I have ever encountered always say things like "no real value" or "not worth Much" or "you would have a hard time selling that". What I mean is for some reason most experts always think monitarily. They've lost the fun of collecting for fun.
Just my opinion.
