I say 1936 where 25 different designs and domination's were issued by the US mint. Even more if you include each mint mark.

1916 is a good choice. I counter with 1873.

Agreed! 1873 saw the production of four different coins whose combined mintages total over 22,000, but total known examples is six.

1796

First year when all the coins authorized by the act of 1792 were issued (wouldn't happen again for over 50 years) and there are a LOT of very rare coins for the year. 1796 Half Cent, 1796 quarter, 1796 half dollar, TWO 1796 quarter eagle designs a no stars with a mintage of 963 and with stars 432 coins made. And that doesn't include several other tough issues for the year or several very rare die varieties.

Have to admit 1873 would also be a great year if your set could include the no arrows CC dime and quarter and the 1873 S no arrows half and the 73 S standard dollar.

Have to admit that 2009 could be in the conversation. Way low mintages! Could be that 50 years from now our grandchildren will be scolding us for not saving more 2009 coins.

What a lesson! I picked 1916, but I have to admit that I didn't know that much about the pre-20th century years. I knew that 1853 had the arrows and rays. I didn't realize 1873 had so much going on, though. I had to do a little research to see what the fuss is about and it seems like it would be a great year to have. Is that 2 different dollars and 2 different Three Cent pieces that year?

I'm a big fan of 1916 but 1921 is a close second.

Of course, if we can count coins that were legally minted but never issued and destroyed, I'm going to have to go with 1964.

1909 had to be exciting- the beautiful new gold coins were just a couple years old and the Lincoln Cent was introduced. Imaging going back in time and saving 1909-s Indian and Lincoln cents as well as 1909-s-vdb!
